The new options let you control which sites are allowed the use of certain content like Cookies, Images, JavaScript, Plugins and Popups. You can create allow and deny settings on a per-site basis allowing you increased control over your web-browsing experience.

There’s also a hotlink to Adobe Flash Player’s Storage Settings where you can set the maximum disk space allowed for Flash content. You can also view websites which are storing Flash data on your computer along with the data they store.

Together these new features add a lot of Value to an already superb browsing experience. Of course these new features might not attract the average user, but in corporate and more restricted environments, like schools and libraries, fine control over the content are a must have.

Google Chrome Developer Channel Update Adds Missing Features

• Purchase Office 2007—Customer buys qualifying Office 2007 product (with or without a new PC) from an authorized reseller between March 5 – September 30, 2010.
• Install and Activate Office 2007—Customer installs and activates Office 2007 by September 30,2010.
• Download Office 2010—Customer simply downloads Office 2010 for free when Office 2010 is available, or orders a DVD for a fee. Customer must request upgrade by October 31, 2010.

Note that you must buy Office 2007 from an authorized retailer or get it preinstalled in a new PC during the above timeframe. Plus you would have to request your free upgrade before October 31, 2010.

Office 2010 RC (release candidate) is now available for download for all the participants of the technical beta program. Promotions like these are nothing new for Microsoft, and Windows products usually get a similar upgrade path whenever a new version is about to be released. Office 2010 FREE upgrade program for Office 2007 users

The build number for the release is 14.0.4734.1000 which is slightly newer build compared to the recently leaked 14.0.4730.1000 Escrow build by WZor. If Microsoft follows is recent public testing strategy, then the build might be released for public download and for MSDN and Technet subscribers in a few weeks, much like the Office 2010 Beta build.

Office 2010 Beta builds have been leaked for download a couple of times and we also have seen the screenshots of the build via WZor. Office 2010 is expected to hit RTM sometime in March, making it ready for the expected June 2010 public release. Microsoft has also announced a Free Upgrade program for Office 2007 customers.

We’ll post the changes and additions to the new Release Candidate once we get access to download the build our self.

Office 2010 RC (Release Candidate) available for Download

The developer channel of Google Chrome today pushed out a new major version again, Google Chrome 5. Just like the previous version update, there seems to be no major new features, yet Google has decided to update the major build number.

The only change I was able to spot was a new Content Settings option under the privacy section (screenshot bellow), which allows users to tweak different content like images, cookies, JavaScript etc on a per-site basis.

You can globally disable any of the above elements or tweak them individually for every site using the exceptions. Surprisingly, the Exceptions… button doesn’t work yet, along with the rather interesting link to configure Adobe Flash storage settings. Looks like Chrome team accidentally slipped out this build even before it was ready.

Though this build is only available for the Developer Channel, you can still download this build because it does feature a number of bug fixes and improvements over the last one. I guess the features would be implemented as minor updates are released for this build.

Mozilla have released yet another update to the latest beta version of its popular browser – Firefox 3.6. The new beta, labeled revision 5 is said to address over a 100 issues from the previous beta release of the browser.

Interestingly, this release also makes Firefox 3.6 one of the only few versions of the browser, which have remained on the beta branch for so long, even though Mozilla itself claims this release to be stable. Another highlight for the Beta 5 release is that, now about 70% of that huge library of add-ons is compatible with Firefox 3.6, so you can rest assured the most of your favorite extensions would work with the new version – though there still might be a couple of loose bolts here and there.

Among other new editions in this release are:

• Support for the HTML5 File API
• A change to how third-party software integrates with Firefox to increase stability.
• The ability to run scripts asynchronously to speed up page load times.
• Users can now change their browser’s appearance with a single click, with built in support for Personas.
• Firefox 3.6 will alert users about out of date plugins to keep them safe.
• Open, native video can now be displayed full screen, and supports poster frames.
• Support for the WOFF font format.
• Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness and startup time.
• Support for new CSS, DOM and HTML5 web technologies.

This still might not be the last beta release for Firefox 3.6 because some of these new features would still require testing and there are still add-ons that need to be updated to support the new version. But you can safely download this version to replace your existing Firefox 3.5 installations, because starting with Firefox 3.6 Beta 5, all versions of the beta node would also receive automatic updates to newer versions.

The application is said to work on a limited number of devices only, though I was able to install it on a Nokia 5630 Xpress Music even though it wasn’t on the list of officially supported devices.

Skype for S60 allows all the basic Skype functionality you would expect including High Quality voice calls (over EDGE, 3G, or Wi-Fi), Instant Messaging, Voice Mail, SMS Messages as well as support for file transfers. You can buy Skype Credit from within the application.

Interestingly, you still can’t make Video Calls even though other Series 60 applications like Fring can now do that as well. I guess this feature would be implemented in a future version, because this is still a beta preview release.

The chat windows also need a bit more work because the layout is pretty dry at the moment.

According to the official blog, the following devices are officially supposed to run Skype, but like I said earlier, it may work on other devices too:

Download Skype for Symbian Series 60 Devices – Official Beta

Apart from the slightly updated UI, you can now sync your favorite locations and starred items from your phone to your Google Account, which means they are accessible from anywhere on the PC or other mobile devices.

Your saved landmarks from other applications such as Ovi Maps are also synced with your account, but I’m not sure you can use starred items to plan a navigation route in Ovi Maps.

Interestingly, the satellite imagery is still outdated for most places so Hardees still shows as an empty lot in the above shot even though I had dinner their about 3 days ago.

The update is only for Windows Mobile and Symbian devices but Google Mobile team says that they are working to get these updates rolled out on other mobile platforms as well. I just hope they decide to update all mobile versions with navigation features like in Android.

Google Maps for Mobile gets updated to version 3.3

Who doesn’t love the HTC Sense UI that was launched with HTC Hero? The perfect balance of dark hues with lime green highlights is simply mind blowing. Unfortunately, the interface is exclusive to HTC’s Android phones, and Windows Mobile 6.5 devices (as an enhanced version of TouchFlo 3D).

Thankfully, someone has stepped up and designed a Nokia Series 60 theme based on the HTC Hero and Sense UI. The theme works on all Series 60 3rd Edition and 5th Edition devices including Nokia E Series.

The theme features the default wallpaper from the Sense UI, along with icons from most Ovi Store applications. In fact, all the 3rd party applications I had installed on my phone had their icons updated.

The only concern I have about the theme is that the rich graphics consume slightly higher RAM compared to the stock themes on Series 60 devices, so if you are a bit conscious about the memory then you should keep an eye on your memory consumption while using this theme. Most users wont feel the difference however.

Facebook applications are the new thing these days, and those (annoying) Quiz applications hold the largest percentage of all applications available out there. But you hardly see any of these applications which have some real value, until now that is.

Mozilla’s Security Quiz is the first Facebook quiz application that actually does something useful. The application asks the user five basic questions about Internet Security, and ranks your knowledge based on them. Interestingly, the application also serves as a security and privacy guideline for developers who design quiz applications because this app doesn’t ask for or store any personal information on your Facebook profile – not even your name.

This is probably the first time I’ve seen a Facebook application taking user privacy so seriously. You can publish your results to your news feed if you like, because that’s the only way to let your friends know about the application.

I hope someone from Facebook is keeping an eye on this little app and decide to make such privacy and security practices mandatory for all applications – but I guess they would just prefer selling our personal information to advertisers for some cash.

Mozilla launches a Quiz application for Facebook to teach users about basic security

Update: Office 2010 RC (Release Candidate) is now available for download.

It did take Microsoft a while but they have finally released Office 2010 Beta for public download – after several leaks of course. Unlike the Office 2010 beta Technical Preview however, the public download build is newer than the leaked builds.

Just head on over to Office 2010 Beta center and sign up for the public beta. Alternatively, you can also download it via MSDN or TechNet if you are a subscriber. By the way, the Multi Access Keys are public, meaning that you can share your Office 2010 download keys with your friends – of course they would need the same Office 2010 beta build to use them.

The build number is Office 2010 beta 14.0.4536.1000, And in case you are wondering, here’s what’s new in Office 2010.
